Video Assignment

First, watch this BBC video about the 5-shot rule: http://www.bbctraining.com/modules/5915/video/1.2.2.htm

1) Check out a Flip video camera from ASC

2) Apply the 5-shot rule to a subject of your choice. It would be wise to do something that could be used in your first story package  – but that’s not a requirement. If you don’t shoot video that can be used for your first story package, focus on a subject that matches your journalistic interests expressed in the blog. If you’re long-term goal is to become a sports reporter, consider shooting a sports event. If you’re into food, consider creating a 5-shot sequence on baking a cupcake (But don’t shoot your roommate baking a cup cake, make it a real story with a real subject that you don’t know personally). You want to show your subject DOING something. If possible, shoot the action in sequence and edit it in sequence.

3) The second part of the assignment is to record a brief interview. Make sure the person you’re interviewing is comfortable as well as framed and lit properly. Since you’re using the Flip, you need to be close enough to your subject to get good audio.

4) Use your 5-shot sequence and your interview to create a short, Tier 2 video package.

5) For editing, I recommend iMovie or FinalCut (AVID does not easily work with Flip video)

6) Upload the video to youtube or vimeo

7) Link (in the case of vimeo) or embed (in the case of youtube) the video clip in your WordPress blog.

DUE DATE: The assignment is due (i.e., clip has been uplaoded to your WordPress blog) next Wedesday by midnight.

IMPORTANT: YOU MUST RETURN YOUR FLIP VIDEO CAM TO ASC BY NOON ON THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 23 SO STUDENTS IN OTHER SECTIONS CAN USE THE EQUIPMENT – THANKS!
